Two deaths and more than 550 arrests during PSG's Champions League victory celebrations; security measures were "up to scratch," says Bruno Retailleau

A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death on the night of Saturday, May 31, to Sunday, June 1 , in Dax, in the Landes region , "during the celebrations" of Paris Saint-Germain's European title. The perpetrator is "on the run," Agence France-Presse (AFP) learned from the prosecutor's office. "A 17-year-old minor died during the night from his injuries at Dax hospital," the duty magistrate told AFP, confirming information from the daily Sud Ouest. "It happened during PSG's celebrations, but the link, like whether they were supporters, cannot be confirmed at this stage."
According to the prosecutor's office, there are no other victims in this case. A homicide investigation has been opened and entrusted to the Bayonne judicial police. A press release is scheduled to be issued on Sunday afternoon.
In Paris's 15th arrondissement, a 20-year-old man riding a scooter was hit by a car and died from his injuries.

In Grenoble, "three or four" people – "this figure remains to be verified," according to the prosecutor's office – from the same family were injured, two of them seriously, after a car hit the crowd celebrating the victory. "A vehicle apparently lost control," the prefecture reported, adding that the driver surrendered himself to the police and is in custody. The driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol, the prosecutor's office said Sunday morning.
"Gangs of vandals and looters"In total, there were more than 500 arrests—559, including 491 in Paris—leading to 320 police custody cases, including 254 in the capital, according to the Interior Ministry. During the evening, which was punctuated by incidents , 22 members of the security forces were injured, including 18 in Paris, according to the same source. The nature and severity of the injuries were not specified. Seven firefighters were injured, as were 192 protesters. In addition, the ministry counted, according to a provisional report, 692 fires, including 264 vehicles.
At a press briefing on Sunday at noon, Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez called for a distinction to be made between PSG supporters and "the gangs of looters and vandals" responsible for the damage around the Parc des Princes and the Champs-Élysées.
"I wouldn't call it a success, since we had set ourselves the goal of not damaging any businesses. And yet, there was," he said, noting that four businesses were looted in the wider Champs-Élysées area. "We can't call it a failure either. You had thousands of people who came to commit atrocities and who, in most cases, were prevented from doing so," he said. A significant force – 5,400 police officers and gendarmes – was deployed in Paris and the inner suburbs.
The RN and LFI attack Bruno Retailleau"The firmness of the security response was there. It was up to the task," said Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau on Sunday. "We will not tolerate any abuse this evening," he said, as PSG players were due to parade on the Champs-Élysées and then present the trophy to their supporters at the Parc des Princes . "The internal security forces have been instructed to intervene systematically and immediately if they observe any violence," added Bruno Retailleau.
The National Rally (RN) and La France Insoumise (LFI) highlighted the responsibility of the Minister of the Interior following this violence.
"The security risk of this evening was clearly underestimated, and the operation was undersized. Paris is being handed over to the rioters," accused the president of the far-right party, Jordan Bardella, on X during the night. "It's obviously a fiasco," added the vice-president of the RN, Sébastien Chenu, on RTL on Sunday. Bruno Retailleau, who won the race for the presidency of LR and whose breakthrough in the polls worries the RN, "does not have the levers to act," also estimated Sébastien Chenu.
On the left, LFI coordinator Manuel Bompard said on France 3 that Bruno Retailleau should be "accountable" . He "would have done better to fulfill" his mission of "ensuring that these festivities could take place in the best possible conditions rather than adding fuel to the fire" , using the term "barbarians" .
